On November 26th, Palisades Tahoe held their Welcome to Winter event. Over Thanksgiving weekend, they opened base area carpets at SnoVentures and Palisades Kids for beginner lessons only.  They are opening First Venture for a limited time for beginners.

This image from the Palisades Tahoe Facebook page shows that they are currently making snow on the lower mountain. The post says: “With recent cold nights and temps dipping into the teens overnight, our crews have been making progress laying down the base!”

December 2021 Snow Report for Lake Tahoe

After the Halloween surprise that allowed area ski resorts to open early, Lake Tahoe experienced a drier and warmer front that forced all resorts to postpone their opening day. Below is an image of the current high pressure system for the first week of December 2021. (From Tropical Tidbits GFS forecast model.)

The good news is that we are going to see a few shifts in pressure systems and precipitation, forecasted to start hitting later next week.

You can see in the above forecast images that a smaller amount of precipitation is forecasted around December 9th and 10th. Additionally, the GFS Models show a shift in the high and low pressure ridges that will accompany this precipitation. The coming low pressure system and precipitation should bring snow.

Around December 7th, the ridge that has kept the area warm and dry appears to be pushed back, as a cold pressure system moves in from the East, bringing cooler temperatures to Lake Tahoe. This will be great for snowmaking efforts preceding the precipitation events that should follow.

Snow levels for the first precipitation event will depend on how far West temperatures continue to dip into freezing.

By the end of the second week of December 2021, this is followed by a normal cold ridge moving in from the North West, We are hopeful that it remains throughout December. The above image for December 15th looks allot like a harbinger of a white Christmas!

The precipitation forecast for December 14th 2021 (below) shows a larger storm forming in California, which should bring enough snow to kick off the ski season.
